I'm not a Johnson fan, but wonder what the rest of you think. Penalty or not?

That should of been a penalty.
I hear what you're saying about their "discretion", but this isn't a discretionary decision. This is black and white. That car WAS serviced outside of it's pitbox. This is a penalty to anyone else on any other day. Period.
With the addition of all the cameras, and the overall increase in penalties in any type of pit road infraction, this really makes one wonder.
We are all human, we make mistakes. The human error is accepted in most other sports (for the most part). But when they are able to catch as many minor infractions as they do, and enforce them, something like this happens and it just makes everyone.......wonder.
I would say the same thing even if it was Erik Jones getting away with that!!! Probably

I agree Ed. Ironically, with the advent of 'all the cameras,' they found Jimmy's crew 'accidentally' hitting the right rear panel in the same place several races in a row as they changed the tires late in the race. When the car was impounded they found that oddly enough, it made the car aerodynamics improved, giving him the ability for more speed. Apparently they learned a little bit from ol' Smokey Yunick!

I didn't say I agreed with NASCAR's decision. If they have a rule about not allowing any service outside of the pit box (not counting the garage area and other places noted), then there should have been a penalty. I was simply pointing out that NASCAR uses that "discretion" clause when they feel they want to use it. They have done this for many decades. It tends to make people think they do this when they want a certain outcome.

Didn't I read somewhere that nobody admitted to installing or tightening a lugnut on that left front corner? Did a NASCAR official see the crewmember put the gun on a lugnut? If they did not actually do any work or if NASCAR couldn't prove it, then there would be no penalty. There is no penalty for simply getting down on your knees and looking at the lugnuts.
So, did a lugnut get serviced or did the crewmember just inspect them?
